Bougher Scaring Batters at Next Level

"If you can battle with your not "A" stuff and get a win it's always a good win."  Stephen Bougher says.

Battling is what Stephen Bougher did best in four years at South Dakota State.  The Nebraska native went 8-2 with a 2.86 earned run average, ending his season on the mound for the Jacks in their first ever NCAA Tournament.

"Making it to regionals was a big deal, especially coming out of the losers bracket after losing the first game.  First two years of my career we lost in the 9th inning to Oral Roberts, so we were right there.  And it was nice to finally get there."  Bougher said.

A just over a week after his college career ended, the battle began anew in professional baseball with the Lincoln Salt Dogs.

"You miss down the middle somebodies going to put it out of the park.  So that's the biggest difference."  Bougher says.

"There all good hitters when you get to this level.  You know, at the college level you can pitch around some guys, they might not have nine strong hitters.  But at the pro level all nine guys here he's gotta make sure he hits his spots."  SDSU Coach Dave Schrage says.

And Stephen's adjusted quickly.  He's 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA in Lincoln, including a win in the familiar confines of Sioux Falls, that saw him shutout the Canaries despite six walks.

"Two outings you can beat the Yankees.  Two outings you're going to lose.  And the other six, that's kind of who defines you.  And I think that was just one of the six."  Bougher says.

It's a mentality Bougher hopes will one day help him get to the big leagues to face the real Yankees.
