SDSU's Thielbar quietly making name for himself

Bookmark and Share

Caleb Thielbar has always been pretty quiet.

He lets his pitching speak for itself.

"You gotta be at your best every single time you go out there her.  So, I mean, I guess it's just a matter of sticking with routine and trusting what you have."  Caleb Thielbar says.

"I love the guy. I mean, he's quiet, quiet kid, you know, goes in there and competes.  Doesn't try to be somebody he's not.  He kind of keeps to himself.  You kinda got initiate the conversation, but once you get him talking, you know, he's a great guy."  Twins Reliever  Brian Duensing says.

The native Minnesotan is also the first Jackrabbit ever make it to the big leagues.  It was part of an unconventional path to the majors, that included a stop in the American Association with the St. Paul Saints.

"It's pretty cool.  I mean, obviously, I love the South Dakota State community.  So I guess I'm pretty proud of that."  Thielbar says.

Two years ago he may have been across the river with the St. Paul Saints, but Caleb couldn't have been any farther from the big leagues.  Something he remembers every time he takes the Target Field mound now.

"It was not the glamorous road to get here so I definitely appreciate every single day here and I'm going to enjoy it while I can."  Thielbar says.

His performance since getting called up in May speaks volumes.

Caleb's career began with a  20 inning scoreless streak and Twins record 17 appearances to start his career with out allowing a run.

"Since the first night he took the mound, he kind of looked like you couldn't tell if he was a rookie or if he had ten years in.  So he's got a great mentality, he's going to come after you with his stuff.  I'm really confident in his stuff and he's been great."  Twins All-Star Catcher Joe Mauer says.

"Reggie Christiansen and Ritchie Price were all about, not just making you good baseball players, but making you good human beings too.  I mean, I just try to keep that as I made it up here."  Caleb says.

From Brookings to the Big Leagues, Caleb Thielbar quietly is making a name for himself.
