GPAC Football Poll: Northwestern Second

SIOUX CITY, IA -- The GPAC kicked off it's 2013 football season with the conference media day on Thursday in Sioux City.

Morningside was picked to repeat as league champion in the preseason poll.  Northwestern was tabbed as the league runner up.  Dakota Wesleyan was picked sixth, with Dordt rounding out the poll in ninth.
 

One of the highlights of the day is the release of the preseason coaches' poll. Morningside is preseason pick to win the GPAC championship.  The Mustangs totaled 80 points and eight (8) first place votes after winning the league in 2012 and advancing to the NAIA National Championship Game in Rome, Georgia.  Northwestern, who advanced to the NAIA Football Championship Series (FCS) first round last fall, was picked second for 2013 with 72 points and one first place vote.  Doane picked up the final first place vote and 61 points in being picked third in the balloting.  Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

For the second year in a row a media poll was conducted among those present at the press conference.  Morningside was tabbed in the media poll to win the GPAC with 116 points and eight (8) first place votes, while Northwestern was tabbed second with 109 points and four (4) first place votes.  Doane was picked third by the GPAC media with 86 points.  Twelve members of the media voted in the poll.

Games for the 2013 season kick off on Saturday, August 31, with Midland hosting Mayville State (ND) and Briar Cliff at Benedictine (KS) in non-conference play.  The GPAC schedule will consist of nine games with week one (September 7) being a bye week in the conference, league games will begin on September 14.
