Rules Approved For Armed School Sentinels

Bookmark and Share

A South Dakota panel has approved rules for training teachers, other school staff members or volunteers to carry guns to improve security in school buildings.

As a reaction to attacks on schools across the country, the Legislature this year approved a law allowing local school districts to designate teachers and others to have guns in schools. The law required the state Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission to set up a training program for the so-called school sentinels.

The commission has approved rules that require sentinels to complete 80 hours of training in firearms proficiency, use of force and other skills.

State officials say no school district has indicated it will arm teachers or others. Officials say the first training course is likely to take place next summer.
