Two years ago Friday a so-called routine traffic stop took place that forever changed the Rapid City Police Department. That traffic stop led to a shootout, in which three officers were shot in broad daylight.
The series of events that took place in North Rapid on August 2nd, 2011, shook most of the community.
That day's shootout claimed the lives of Officers Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong and wounded Officer Tim Doyle. The assailant, Daniel Tiger, was also fatally wounded that day.
Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender says since that time, the community and police department have leaned on each other to heal. Allender says he's kept in contact with the families of the fallen officers, and says they're doing as well as can be expected.
He says although it's now a time to move on, he hopes the community never forgets the sacrifice his officers made for the safety of the community that day.
