At 1:40 a.m., two dozen firefighters responded to a fire on the 300 block of South Saint Paul Avenue in Sioux Falls. A police officer, who just happened to be patrolling the neighborhood at the time, noticed an unusual blanket of smoke in the air. After following the smoke, he came upon a house, up in flames.
“We had a couple of officers that were able to see a woman inside the front door, pulled her out, tried some resuscitation,” Officer Sam Clemens of the Sioux Falls Police Department described the scene, “That was stopped by ambulance personnel and she was pronounced dead on the scene.”
She was identified as Jennifer Donaldson, she was 40 years old.
Investigators were at the scene, sifting through the charred remains of the home, looking for clues as to what caused the fire.
Officer Clemens described the protocol, “Any fires, especially if there is deaths and that, our detective will work with the fire inspectors to find out exactly what happened.”
The Sioux Falls woman had four children, ages 17, 15, 7 and 5. Officials have located all of the children, they were not home at the time and are safe.
The family has boarded up the house, but the cause of death is still unknown. Funeral services are being held a Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. Dates and times have not been officially set.
