Sioux Falls Proposed Scalping Ordiance

Bookmark and Share

The Sioux Falls City Council is looking to pass a new ordinance that would ban ticket scalping.

A Sioux Falls ticket broker says the council's heart is in the right place, but he says the ordinance goes too far.
Brian Opp says the internet has changed the ticket selling business.
He favors a simple ordinance banning ticket scalpers 1/2 mile from the venue.
He says it would mimic rule sin larger cities like Omaha and Minneapolis and allow licensed ticket brokers like him to stay in business and pay local taxes.

“Sioux Falls would get tax revenue if legal here for brokers. If Ticketmaster is only one with their sister site Tickets Now, and their exchange system, taking money from the primary and secondary markets. Then they will take all the revenue from there, South Dakota won't see a dime,” said Opp.

Opp says representatives from "The Ticket Network", the 2nd largest ticket reseller are concerned about the proposed ordinance. He says they called him and have been in contact with council members and the mayor.

Opp feels a simple ordinance would serve the city better than a complicated one.

“That is doing a half mile radius ticket scalping ban, so that people aren't bothered, so that makes the NCAA happy and will bring those crucial Womens' basketball tournaments to our city which in turn means more tax revinue,” said Opp.

Opp will make a presentation to the city council at next Tuesday's meeting explaining his concerns with the current proposal.
