Packing Bags For Project S.O.S.

Bookmark and Share

School shopping can be expensive. And for those struggling to pay the bills, having the funds to send their kids back to school with a backpack full of new supplies, may not be possible.

So, that's where Project S.O.S comes in.

Last year the group donated more than 6,000 backpacks stuffed with everything a student would need to start the school year.

“You don't want to slow down too much because everyone is just standing there going come on! Hurry up!” said Heidi Evans.

“She passes it after they put in some markers in colored pencils and then I pass it on for the rulers,” said Rachel Van Roekel.

“I’m combining paper binders into a backpack. They have this down to an art form,” added Evans.

Six-thousand students in the Sioux Falls area will head back to school, Monday, prepared.

Thanks to the dozens of people cramming, stuffing, and filling backpacks to the brim.

“I may not have enough financial funds to donate but I have my time and that could be just as valuable,” said Evans.

Project S.O.S takes thousands of dollars of donated materials and makes kids who would have nothing ready to take on the year.

“It makes the difference between starting the year off in a great way or pretty sad without having the supplies you need,” said Madeline Shields of The Banquet.

The bags will be trucked to Whittier Middle School to be handed out Saturday morning. And the lines will be long.

“People are desperate. They want their children to be able to have the supplies that they need to make them successful,” said Shields.

And some, like Heidi Evans, say the best part of volunteering for Project SOS is seeing the kids try on their new backpacks.

“Some of them are extremely grateful,” said Evans. “Something would seem so simple to some people and mean a lot to other people.”

Ready or not school starts on Monday and now students in Sioux Falls will be ready.
