Award Dedicated To Sen. George McGovern

Bookmark and Share

Former Senator George McGovern is being honored. Not only did Co-op Natural Foods in Sioux Falls dedicate a Civic Achievement Award to McGovern for his life-long contribution, they donated a small check in his honor.

It's something he fought for when he was alive, but now, even in his passing, his impact lives on.

"When you think about South Dakota and you think about food and charity in food, there's only one name that comes up for us," said general manager for Co-op Natural Foods, Molly Langley.

That name is George McGovern. Bearing the button, "I'm with George," the senator's former staff member and close friend shares words about his passion of making sure no one goes hungry. A passion he had long before he even stepped foot in office.

"When he was 22 years old, and a combat pilot in Europe, he stayed extra time and he flew food drops to the starving populations in Europe. Even those countries that had fought us," said close friend Judy Harrington.

During his time in office, he continued his mission, staying involved with several food organizations. McGovern was appointed by Kennedy to be the first director for 'Food For Peace' and also developed the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program that fed children around the world, while not forgetting the need in South Dakota.

“His ‘Food For Peace’ was more than a campaign or an office. For him, it was a philosophy,” said Harrington.

Even when McGovern was ill, all donations were sent to Feeding South Dakota. So far, the organization says they have received about $100 Thousand just in his name.

"Not only did McGovern help to provide those donations to support hungry children, but he just raised so much awareness in our efforts to eliminate hunger in this part of the state," said DeGraff, Development Director Feeding South Dakota.

The donation in McGovern's name will benefit Feeding South Dakota's Backpack Program. The program provides food to 5,000 kids in need in 70 schools across the state of South Dakota. It insures they have food over the weekend when the children aren't in school.
