Gau, Alexandria Walk Off With State B Title

Bookmark and Share

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --  The Alexandria Angels scored three runs in the 9th inning, defeating Winner/Colome 4-3 in the championship game of the State B Amateur Tournament on Tyson Gau's walkoff single.

Gau, who started on the mound and pitched a complete game, trailed virtually from the get-go.  Tarrell Bauld hit a two-out RBI single in the first to give Winner/Colome a 1-0 lead.  Despite 10 strikeouts from Gau, Winner appeared to salt the game away in the top of the ninth when Blake Nielsen stunned the crowd by hitting a check-swing homerun to left that made it 3-1.

Undaunted, Pierce Smith and Cory Marek walked to leadoff the bottom of the ninth.  Following a force out at third, Cole Wenande laced a single to left, tying the game at three.  After an intentional walk, Gau hit a drive to the gap that scurried past the Winner/Colome outfielders, bringing Wenande home with the winning run.
