For one Sioux Falls business this week has started out with a bang, literally. Around 3:30 Monday afternoon police responded to a car that hit a Ramada Hotel on S. Lyons Avenue.
According to police a man was driving eastbound on W. 12th Street when he took an unexpected route right into the side of a Ramada Hotel. Luckily, no one was in the hotel room that was hit. But managers of the hotel said this was a scary event none the less.
“We heard an accident but we didn't expect to see a car in the side of our building,” said Assistant Manager at the Ramada Hotel Trisha Quarve.
Quarve said her and the owner of the hotel were in a meeting at the other end of the building when they heard a loud bang.
“There was a guest at the end of the hall that said there had been an accident,” recalled Quarve.
Quarve said they ran out of the room, saw the door at the end of the hallway was gone, and a car in the building.
Police said the driver was going eastbound on W. 12th Street when he veered of the road and went through the Shop and Cart parking lot. He then crossed over Edmond Avenue, dodged a pick-up truck in the hotel's parking lot, and then went right into a hotel room.
“Of course we were concerned, he was a young man,” said Quarve. “I'm just glad everyone is OK.”
Quarve said she went outside to make sure everyone was OK. She said initially they thought there had been more than one vehicle involved in the accident. Luckily there wasn't. Now Quarve said they are stuck with a lot of cleanup and a heavily damaged building.
“It’s going to be a long road ahead as far as construction and business,” said Quarve.
The driver of the car was arrested for a DUI. Police said they believe he was under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the accident. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
