Joah's Pink Bags of Hope

Bookmark and Share

Joah Royer looks like your average sixth grader. However, she has started something that proves she is well beyond her years.

Her project is called pink bags of hope. It's an idea that began after Joah's grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. Joah fills pink bags with goodies, and delivers them to patients going through chemo. She started buying items for the bags with her own tooth fairy money.

“I had a tooth pulled that night, and then I got about three or four dollars. I went out and bought a couple dollar things and made one bag and delivered it to my grandma,” said Joah.

What started out as a small idea soon gained momentum

“When I walked in I saw that nobody else really got any so then I decided to make some for them who didn't have family members close that could give them something,” said Joah.

“When your kid comes home, they're eleven years old at the time, and they say they want to do something like this, you don't tell them no. It's a great thing to see," said Ryan Royer, Joah’s father.

Each bag is packed by Joah, and decorated with a different message. She says she wants to give patients items that will simply put a smile on their face.

“We were surprising somebody and we gave them mustaches. We got a picture when they were on the boat and they had the mustaches on,” said Joah.

“When people get them I think they're taken back. I think they're blown away that this little girl would think of doing it,” said Joah’s father.

Joah's tooth fairy funds eventually ran out. That's when the donations started coming in. She has received boxes of goodies from local businesses, and patients who have been touched by her.

“She wants to go everywhere and anywhere she can. If she puts a bunch of bags together one day and says she wants to go take them to Sioux Falls then we'll throw them in the car and head out to Sioux Falls,” said Joah’s father.

And that is Joah’s ultimate goal. To deliver pink bags and a little hope to as many people as possible.
