Tribal members on South Dakota's Rosebud Indian Reservation will soon have access to a modern workout facility and other resources to help prevent and treat diabetes.
The wellness center under construction in Rosebud is part of a $5.4 million investment from the world's largest manufacturer of insulin, Denmark-based Novo Nordisk Inc.
The company will formally announce the effort Friday.
The money will also fund a mobile unit that will screen tribal members who don't have transportation and train certified diabetes educators who are native.
American Indians have the highest rate of diabetes among all races and ethnic groups in the U.S.
Connie Brushbreaker heads up Rosebud's diabetes education program and says the additional resources are needed because a lack of funding, space and staff have limited what she can do.
