Drive-Ins Looking For Your Vote

Bookmark and Share

Clipping, cutting and splicing. These are the processes that will soon be eliminated with a digital projector.

"There'll be no film with a digital projector. This will all be gone," said Glenn Burmeister, owner of The Verne Drive In in Luverne, Minn.

Glenn has countless memories of The Verne, and says that closing is simply not an option.

"My favorite memories, there are so many. Maybe sneaking in when we were kids," said Glen.

The Verne is in the running for Honda's Project Drive-In. It's a campaign that aims to keep drive-in theaters around the country in business by donating a digital projector.

"Honda feels it's very important to keep as many open as they can. And the disadvantage the drive-in theaters have over the indoor theaters especially in the midwest, is that we're only open five months of the year," said Glenn.

With movies no longer available on old fashioned film, drive-ins are forced to make the switch, or shut down.

The drive in has been a staple in American history for more than eighty years. However, less than fifty percent of the drive-ins left in the country can afford to upgrade to the digital projector.

"To spend $75,000 to $80,000 is kind of tough when you only have so many months that you're open to help pay it back," said Glenn.

Honda plans to donate five digital projectors to drive-ins across the country. Glenn says he thinks The Verne has just as good of a chance as anybody.
