Jacks Fall To Loyola In Overtime

Bookmark and Share

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team lost in overtime 2-1 to Loyola (Ill.) on Sunday afternoon. Alyssa Brazil scored the lone goal for the Jackrabbits.

Sunday’s game had a similar feel to the one on Friday night.

The Ramblers scored their first goal of the game just ten minutes in. Monika Lee was able to corral a loose ball in the box and give the Ramblers the first lead of the game. Eylssa Kulas assisted Lee on the goal.

The Jackrabbits rattled off three shots within a seven-minute period after Lee’s goal, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Loyola took a 1-0 lead going into the break. Just like Friday night the Jackrabbits responded quickly in the second half.

SDSU got on the board right away in the second half. Brazil netted a goal from about 30 yards out in the 47th minute.

The Jacks recorded 13 shot attempts in the second half, but only scored one goal.

Dani Patterson made one last effort with thirty seconds left, but her shot went wide.

Like the game on Friday night, both teams remained tied going late into the final minutes. This time though the teams went into overtime tied at one.

Loyola only had one shot attempt in the overtime period and it was the game-winner. The Ramblers scored on a header off a corner kick. Kristin Rodriguez headed the pass from Shelby Koch into the back of the net.

Head coach Lang Wedemeyer shared his thoughts on the beginning of the second half, he said, “We had plenty of chances to win this game that we missed. We were able to score early and we took our foot off the pedal, we needed to take advantage of the momentum and score again.“

The Jackrabbits not only have to prepare for their two games this upcoming weekend, but the Texas heat as well. Projected forecasts for San Antonio, Texas are in the lower hundreds to the high nineties.

This week the Jackrabbits will try to adjust to weather that they will compete in, Wedemeyer noted, “We are going to push them and try to get them acclimated to the heat that they are going to deal with.”

The Jacks outshot the Ramblers 20-10.

SDSU falls to 0-2-0 on the season, while Loyola improves to 1-0-1 overall.

The Jackrabbits will now pack their bags as they head to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the UTSA Tournament. SDSU will play Lamar on Friday at 4 p.m. and Sam Houston State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
