The city of Sioux Falls knows it has a downtown parking problem and is trying to do something about it.
Today the city unveiled a new approach to public parking, with Director of Community Development, Darrin Smith explaining the plan.
“In city government there are a lot of different topics that people have opinions on, but trust me, everybody has an opinion on parking”, said Smith.
That's why Smith says the city is launching its new campaign; it includes a new brand for the entire public parking system, new signage on public parking lots and ramps and new vehicle wraps and uniforms for city parking staff. They will be easy to find with new yellow and blue uniforms. There will also be Future technology improvements, for example paying parking tickets on line
A public awareness effort to be launched to convince people that parking downtown is easy. And a new mobile site to help residents and visitors find parking spaces.
“How can we help people find exactly where they can go to park, and then literally walk them right to that parking space that's what we want to do, and that's what we feel we've accomplished, said Smith.
Siouxfallsparking.org can be accessed using a desk top computer or a mobile device. Of course smith says this should not be used while drivers are behind the wheel because that would violate the city's new ordinance banning the use of electronic devices while driving, which does not include GPS devices.
“I would encourage people to have a passenger use it, and if they are alone, just like I would encourage them with their GPS, pull over, and tell it where you want to go and it will talk back to you and tell you,” said Smith.
Smith says the city also realizes there is a lot of confusion when it comes to downtown parking, especially when it comes to telling the difference between a public and private parking lot. So the best advice, just look for a sign with a gold P.
