When you ask Ken Teunissen about the American Flag, you can see the sense of pride that comes across his face.
American Legion Post 15 Commander Ken Teunissen said, "This is the flag of our nation. We've all fought for freedom that we can stand here today and enjoy our freedom without government intervention."
That's because his dad is a World War II Veteran, his two brothers served in the armed services, and as for the the American Legion Post 15 Commander, he was drafted in 1969 and served in Vietnam.
Teunissen said, "(I served)... a total of seven years, 11 months and 23 days in the Army."
So when this Craigslist post was brought to his attention. Naturally, he was upset.
"It's very disturbing that someone would take such little respect, pay such little respect to the American Flag," said Teunissen.
Posted Tuesday, the ad lists an American Flag being sold for 40 dollars by someone in Sioux Falls. But it's not what's in writing that's controversial. It's the pictures posted alongside it. In one them, the flag is laying on the grass. Another shows the flag laying on the floor.
"Just in our family alone we learned from young children on that to respect the flag and one of the things, dad, our father taught us was never let it touch the ground," said Teunissen.
Teunissen says an American Flag should never touch the ground, even when it's laid across a casket. If it's flown, it should be raised at sunrise and taken down at sunset. If it stays up overnight, it's to be lit.
There's also a special way to fold a flag. These are all things he learned at a young age, things he hopes to pass onto others, especially the seller.
Teunissen says he emailed the seller but the person has not responded. However, the seller did change the picture in the ad. It appears if it's the same, but doesn't show the floor. KDLT also tried contacting the seller, they didn't respond.
Members of the American Legion say if anyone would like to learn flag etiquette, contact them and they will be happy to help you out.
