Back the Farm Bill Rally At SD State Fair

Bookmark and Share

The fair goers in Huron were feeling the heat Saturday, but Sen. Tim Johnson says it's nothing compared to the heat they'll be feeling in Washington to finish the farm bill. With less than a month to go before the current bill runs out, the house and the senate on both the state and federal level, are in a hurry to come to an agreement.

Dozens gathered at the South Dakota State Fair on Saturday to hear Senator Johnson and a panel of supporters speak on the progress of the bill. The rally was held to urge the House to act as quickly as possible.

"Let us work out our differences, and let's get a farm bill," said Johnson.

"As a member of the senate, I hear you loud and clear, and I share your frustration about how slow this process has been," said Sen. Johnson.

Johnson isn't the only one who is frustrated by the slow pace of the process. State representative and farmer Dennis Feickert of Aberdeen would like to see some activity in congress.

"I hope somehow we can get beyond this issue of partisan politics and try to get on with the business of helping farmers," said Feickert.

The new bill is expected to create jobs nationwide, and reduce the national debt. Johnson reminded the crowd that the bill rests on both side's ability to compromise.

"Not everyone up here supported each piece of the bill, myself included. But, that's what compromise is all about, and that's what we have to do to develop a long term farm bill," said Johnson.

If the house and senate have not reached an agreement by Sept. 30, Johnson says extending the current bill is simply not an option.
