Police are searching for a man who allegedly raped a woman in downtown Sioux Falls.
It was at around 12:30 Sunday morning when police say the 30-year-old Sioux Falls woman was walking near 5th Street and Main Avenue.
Officer Sam Clemens said, "As she was walking she said a guy ended up grabbing her by the hair, pulling her backwards."
Police say a man pulled her into an area similar to an alley way in between two buildings, the Tri State Creamery building and these loft apartments. That's where she says he raped her.
Clemens said, "Once he pulled her into the alley, she said he ended up pulling both his pants and her pants down and then he raped her."
She told police she was yelling but there was no traffic, no one to help her.
Police say after the man fled. They say the victim then went to the Public Safety Building on Minnesota Avenue, which is just a block or so where he rape allegedly took place. It was there that she reported the incident."
Police say although these types of incidents are rare in Sioux Falls, it's definitely alarming.
"We don't have these type of things very often, the vast majority of the sexual assaults, the suspect is known to the victim," Clemens said.
Police say there are things you can do to protect yourself. They say if you can don't walk alone at night.
If you have to get somewhere, find someone to walk with and walk in lit areas. They recommend telling someone when you leave and when you will be arriving. And, always carry your cell phone with you.
The woman describes the suspect as a 5'6" to 5'10" white male weighing 160 to 180 pounds.
She says he has a shaved head and at the time of the incident, he was wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans. If you have any information, you're urged to call the Sioux Falls Police Department or CrimeStoppers at 367-7007.
