The freezers are bare. The coolers and shelves are empty. It's a far cry from what you'll be seeing inside Costco Wholesale on 41st Street and Grange Avenue in Sioux Falls in less than 30 days.
Costco Marketing and Membership Manager David Burkholder said, "To fully load this store up, we're going to be receiving five semis per day from Monday morning 'til the stores opening."
When the national retailer opens, customers will come through the front doors.
Costco General Manager Bruce Miles said, "We have what we call a horseshoe. It's a main aisle that encompasses the building and you'll run into fine wines, fresh produce, a bakery, fresh meat and rotisserie chickens."
The store will also have a frozen foods section, a high-end clothing selection, full service pharmacy and hearing center, complete with 12 check out lanes. Outside, you'll see the sign for the tire center. There's even a gas station.
Miles said, "It's a wide range. We carry about 4,000 items. You're gunna find Heinz Ketchup to Samsung and Sharp TV's."
To shop, Costco requires a membership, but they say just because it's a warehouse, doesn't mean everything will come in bulk.
Burkholder said, "Eighty-percent of the product that we sell will fit into your refrigerator and will fit into your pantry. Twenty percent of the product we sell is bulk."
To get everything ready, around 100 construction workers, many local, are coming and going each day.
"It's organized chaos. I think that's the best way to describe it," said Miles.
They expect even more controlled chaos in the form of lines when they open their doors on Oct. 3.
Costco in Sioux Falls has already hired 160 employees and expects to have more than 200 employees when the store opens.
They've also sold around 400 memberships already. There are two memberships available. One is called the 'Executive Membership' which runs $110 plus tax. With that one, you can earn two percent cash back on the items you purchase. The 'Gold Star' membership costs $55, which gets you in the door to shop.
Costco is holding a VIP evening on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. You can purchase a membership there or you can stop into their temporary office at 1111 W. 41st Street Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
