SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana carried a 41-7 lead into halftime, and earned a 41-28 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead after the Dragons (0-1) scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. The Vikings move to 1-0 on the season, and get a win for Jerry Olszewski, who was coaching his first game at Augustana.

Four of Augustana's seven scores were made by the defense or special teams. Lucas Wainman finished the game 2 for 2 on field goals, including a school record 53-yarder in the first half. The previous record, which held strong for 34 years, was 52 yards set by Dave Koehn on Sept, 22, 1979 against Morningside.

Trey Heid, who was making his first career start at quarterback for Augustana, finished the game 18 of 26 passing for 166 yards. Heid tossed for one touchdown and one interception in the game. Heid also ran for 83 yards on 15 attempts, while finding the end zone on the ground for his first career score.

Heid's touchdown run of 34 yards was the longest by an Augustana quarterback since Josh Hanson rushed for a 71-yard touchdown against Minnesota State on Oct. 30, 2010.

CJ Ham finished the game with 66 rushing yards and a career-high 43 receiving yards. He also caught his first career touchdown pass, a 16-yarder from Heid.

Nick Lee set a career marks with four receptions and 40 receiving yards. Matt Gerry led all Viking receivers with five catches for 46 yards.

True freshman Demetrius Carr finished the game 30 of 45 passing for 369 yards and four touchdowns in his collegiate debut for MSU Moorhead.

Ben Skelly led Augustana defensively with a career-high seven tackles. Skelly recorded five solo tackles, including a tackle for loss and force a fumble. Brandon Mohr matched his career-high with seven tackles, including one for a loss while recovering a fumble.

Devon Alber recorded his first career interception when he stepped in front of a Demetrius Carr pass on the first play from scrimmage for the Dragons, setting up the Vikings in scoring position early. MSUM's defense forced a three-and-out setting up Wainman's first career field goal at Augustana. Wainman nailed a 41-yarder to give Augustana an early 3-0 lead.

Carr responded well for the Dragons on their next possession completing a 31-yard pass followed by a 41-yard pass for a touchdown giving MSUM a 7-3 lead just three minutes into the first quarter.

The Viking defense quickly gave Augustana its second lead of the game when Steven Miller stripped Preston Prince after he caught a pass and sophomore Chad Curry scooped up the ball and returned it 34 yards for his first career touchdown. The score put Augustana back in front, now 10-7.

The defense kept the momentum rolling with a three-and-out setting up a four-play 67-yard drive that ended with Trey Heid scoring his first career touchdown. Heid went to his right on an option keeper and cut back to the left side of the field and turned on the jets to score a 34-yard touchdown giving his team a 17-7 lead with 6:26 remaining in the first half.

MSU Moorhead established a long drive on its next possession going 53 yards on 14 plays to get to Augustana's 12-yard line but Wes Kramer pulled a 29-yard field goal attempt wide left with 2:13 left in the first quarter.

Wainman showed off his leg for a second time in the game on Augustana's next possession, drilling a 53-yard field goal, giving Augustana a 20-7 lead. The kick set an Augustana record for the longest field goal in school history.

Augustana's special teams play continued to fuel the big lead as Tegan Brown broke through MSUM's punt team for the block, recovery and the touchdown giving Augustana a 27-7 lead.

The last time Augustana returned a block kick for a touchdown was on Sept. 19, 2009 against Minnesota Duluth when Mike Vanasek recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.

On the very next play from scrimmage, Zach Sirek forced a fumble that was recovered by Brandon Mohr at MSUM's 31 yard line. Three plays later, Heid connected on his first career touchdown pass to Ham, who caught his first career touchdown pass, giving the Vikings a 34-7 lead.

After another three-and-out by MSU Moorhead, Dajon Newell busted off a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:13 left in the first half, which gave the Vikings a 41-7 lead heading into halftime.

Augustana rushed for 159 yards in the first half, led by Newell's 101 yards. Trey Heid was 11 of 14 passing for 94 yards and a touchdown in the first half. MSUM rushed for 39 yards in the half and passed for 122.

Augustana lost fumbles on its first two possessions of the second half allowing MSU Moorhead to make it a 20 point game at 41-21 with 6:18 to play in the third quarter.

MSU Moorhead went on to score 21 unanswered points in the second half, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Augustana will hit the road next Saturday to take on Minot State University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium in Minot, N.D.
