Mixed Emotions With Presidents Bowl Parking

Bookmark and Share

Twelve-thousand people were expected to pack the stands at Howard Wood Field for this year’s Presidents Bowl. But in order for fans to cheer on their favorite Sioux Falls High School football team, they had to come early, dodge construction and some even had to take a walk just to get a spot.

Every year before the President's Bowl begins, security has to shuffle cars in and out of the main parking lot in front of Howard Wood Field. The parking spaces filled up fast Saturday night, which meant some had to make quite a hike to the stadium.

"It’s a long trek to get over there. I’m walking a ways already," said fan Doug Cordell.

Officials with the City of Sioux Falls say there are a total of six parking lots near Howard Wood Field and off-site parking up to four blocks away. With the construction of the new events center, some parked further than they would have liked.

"It’s not very good. I feel the parking was far away and it was congested over there so you had to drive around and find a spot. Then you have to walk all the way to get there," said Cordell.

While some are having trouble parking, others say it hasn't been a problem.

"It was a good experience. I was able to find a parking spot pretty easy," said fan Ray Pierson.

Ray Pierson attends the Presidents Bowl every year. He says he's not complaining about the walk to get to the field because he knows there will be thousands here in one day.

"The boards that were up. It was easy to direct me to my parking spot. I was able to find something in short time. I am not very far from the field," said Pierson.

It's the second year that the city has had to deal with the construction with events center. Representatives with the Presidents Bowl say they knew parking could potentially be an issue.

"The parking has been fairly tight but I think with the nice weather it's nice to get out and walk to a place," said Presidents Bowl Coordinator Carla Thomsen.

Although some had mixed emotions, it's what they have to do to cheer on their favorite team.

Unlike last year, shuttles were not provided to fans.
