One contestant in the Miss America pageant is focusing on her ability, not her disability.
Miss Iowa, Nicole Kelly, was born without her left forearm. But she never let that get in the way of what she wanted to do, including playing baseball, dancing or diving.
The 23-year-old resident of Keokuk hopes for a career in Broadway theater management.
She tells The Associated Press that she is just like everyone else, even though she looks a little different. Her pageant platform deals with overcoming disabilities, and she looks forward to giving attention to the talents of people with disabilities.
She entered her first pageant this January, rising through the ranks to become Miss Iowa.
The pageant winner will be crowned Sunday night in Atlantic City, N.J.
