Neighborhood Volunteers Clean Up SF Railroad

Bookmark and Share

You can call it an eyesore for the city. Trash littered across the railroad tracks in Sioux Falls.

Now neighborhood volunteers have partnered with the city and Ellis and Eastern Railroad Company to clean it up.

"I'm hoping it shows people that we care about our neighborhood, and that we're serious about making it better, no matter who lives here," said neighborhood volunteer, Darrell Bartell.

Four different neighborhood associations came together Saturday morning for the cleanup effort.

Head of All Saints Neighborhood Association, Katrina Lehr-McKinney says she's been hearing complaints about the trash for the past two years.

"You can't dump here, you can't litter here, please don't do it," said Lehr-McKinney.

She hopes the cleanup will inspire other neighborhoods to get involved.

"It brings people together. It gives them a sense of ownership in their neighborhoods, and in their community," said Lehr-McKinney.

The volunteers found some interesting items covering two and a half miles of tracks on Saturday. Including a doll arm, and numerous metal pipes.

The ditches on the side of the tracks make it easy for trash to pile up over time without being seen. The volunteers are hopeful all that will change soon.

"It sets a precedent and an expectation that we care about our neighborhoods, and that we're willing to get our hands dirty to make our neighborhoods better and more beautiful," said Lehr-McKinney.

It's easy to get your hands dirty, when it's for a good cause.
