Two people are dead after a collision on Highway 37, about four miles south of Mitchell. The accident happened after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a van travelling south on Highway 37 drifted into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a pickup truck.
"The two people were dead on scene. They were transported out of here by the coroner," South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Peterson said.
Both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.
A sheriff's deputy said that a 3-year-old girl was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with injuries. Witnesses say a young man who came upon the accident used a knife to cut a seat belt and remove the girl from one of the burning vehicles.
Traffic was diverted for several hours and smoke could be seen from miles away.
Officials say neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.
