A group of volunteers put their canoes and kayaks in the Big Sioux River Wednesday night, but it wasn't for recreation.
The South Dakota Canoe and Kayak Association spent the evening picking up trash in the river. Volunteers walked the muddy banks and paddled along fallen trees collecting everything from buckets, to discarded bottles, and even a bicycle.
"It's a beautiful stretch through Sioux Falls and all of us love to paddle and come out and enjoy the river, so we want to do our part to clean up the trash," Steven Dahlmeier, who is President of the South Dakota Canoe and Kayak Association, said.
The clean-up is an annual event for the group. On Wednesday, they focused on a section of the river near East 26th Street in Sioux Falls. The week prior, volunteers collected about 400 pounds of trash near Yankton Trail Park.
