A replica of one of the largest gold nuggets every found in South Dakota's Black Hills has been sold for $40,000 at an auction.
The proceeds of the auction will be combined with other funds to support a project that helps wounded military veterans and Deadwood History Inc., which operates four historical institutions in Deadwood.
The Potato Creek Johnny 2 gold nugget was bought by John Christopher Fine, a New York marine biologist, author and sunken treasure hunter.
Fine says his winning bid at the Saturday night auction had little to do with the worth of the gold nugget. He says he wants to help wounded veterans who are willing to go out and lose their limbs or their lives.
