Day One Of The Government Shutdown In SD

Bookmark and Share

Thousands of South Dakota workers are a part of the nearly 800,000 workers who were told they can't work today.  Agencies hit hard today, the National Guard, over 500 workers were placed on furlough for the foreseeable future.

EROS workers usually have their eye on the sky, Tuesday; their eyes are on the road, as car after car departed from the federally funded facility. The people inside those cars, not knowing when they'll return to work or when their next paycheck will be.

“Right now, just time off. Do some stuff around home until they open the government back up again,” said Jason Weber as he was leaving EROS.

The US Department of Agriculture: closed, with a note reminding those in need of their services to come back when Congress has the countries financials straightened out.

“This should have been the absolutely last resort. These are like petulant children,” said Doug Murdock.

The federal courthouse in Sioux Falls keeps their doors open but, if the shutdown lasts for two weeks, furloughs go into effect there as well.

Some voters have a strong message to Congress.

“It's an embarrassment. It really is,” said Doug Murdock.

“I'm disappointed that they couldn't get to some sort of agreement that would keep the government open,” added Wayne Fanebust.

“I'm frustrated. But, you know, they need to get their act together and do what they need to do,” said Weber.

Workers hurting from this government shutdown have no idea when they'll return their desks, as they sit waiting without a paycheck.

“If they were to shut down for a long time it would be (harmful) but I'm hoping it's a quick resolution,” said Weber.

With senators and representatives butting heads in the Nation’s Capital, the road ahead will be challenging for some furloughed federal employees.
