Staff and YMCA members gathered downtown Tuesday as officials showed off architect renderings of what the club will look like after the remodeling is complete.
Mike Gulick, President and CEO of the YMCA – Sioux Falls, was thrilled about the announcement, "There was a desire for more modern facilities, handicap accessibility, better equipment, that was kind of the theme that came through.”
Construction will begin later this month in the hope of making the north half of the building into a updated gym while the south side will be converted into affordable housing. Gulick emphasizes that this will be a larger renovation, "We did do some equipment upgrades, but really we were limited to what we could do with the structure."
The project is called New Day New YMCA, and after it is complete, the organization hopes to continue their work focusing on their core values; youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Gulick says, "It was time for the board to really focus on being able to do something to the structure that would be inviting and give that member satisfaction experience that they have been wanting.”
Nancy Neiburg says that this accounts for many needs that are present not just in Sioux Falls, but the actual neighborhood itself, “We are looking for a lot of improvements for a easy access to disabled people, we are also looking for changes in the youth programs here at the YMCA and we also need more space."
In just months, the YMCA expects to have a cleaner more vibrant layout, and one that will prove to be a better facility for years to come.
