National statistics show that one woman experiences domestic violence every nine seconds in the United States.
October is domestic violence awareness month. To show their support, members of the Minnehaha County Family Violence Council placed purple ribbons on all law enforcement vehicles today.
Law enforcement officials will display the purple ribbons through the end of the month.
"We hope that the message gets out there that we don't want to see domestic violence continue. Anything we can do to try to stop or limit domestic violence is really what we're hoping for," said Sioux Falls Police Officer, Sam Clemens.
This is the first event kicking off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Family Violence Council will be hosting 'Take Back The Night' on Oct. 10 at Old Courthouse Museum.
