Stampede Return To Winning Ways At Sioux City

Bookmark and Share

Sioux City, IA—The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied to spoil another home opener Saturday night. This time, the Herd rallied from a 1-0 deficit to top the Sioux City Musketeers, 2-1 in overtime at the Tyson Events Center. Chad Duchesne scored the game winner in overtime while Keith Burchett tallied the game tying goal in the third period. David Jacobson improved to 3-0-0 in goal, stopping 21 of 22 shots on the night. The win improved the Stampede’s record to 4-1-0 as they remain perfect on the road at 4-0-0 and in first place in the Western Conference.

The Stampede looked good out of the gates, creating several good scoring chances, but were shut down by Sioux City goaltender Kyle Hayton. Eight minutes into the period, the Stampede were caught with too many men on the ice, giving the Musketeers a power play. Kyle Schmidt made the Stampede pay at 8:16 when he knocked in a loose rebound in front of the Stampede net. Blake Heirich’s shot was stopped by Stampede goaltender David Jacobson, but the rebound bounced to Schmidt who backhanded the shot into the net. That would be the only goal of the period as the Musketeers took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. The Stampede outshot the Muskies, 9-7 in the period.

In the second, the Stampede had several good chances to score, but could not get the bounce they needed. The Herd had four power play opportunities in the period, but the Musketeers would not budge, holding the Stampede off the board. The Musketeers nearly made it 2-0 in the final minute as Schmidt broke free on a shorthanded breakaway, but Jacobson made a terrific glove save to keep the game 1-0 at the end of two periods. The Herd outshot the Musketeers, 12-6 in the period.

The Stampede continued their offensive pressure in the third period and it paid off at 8:56 when the Stampede snapped a five period scoreless drought on a goal from Keith Burchett. Burchett broke across the Sioux City zone down the left wing side and wristed a shot from inside the left circle past the stick side of Musketeers goaltender Kyle Hayton to tie the game 1-1. Sioux Falls controlled much of the play for the rest of the period, but were unable to beat Hayton. Jacobson continued to play solid down the stretch in goal, making two more glove saves in the period to keep the Musketeers off the board and force overtime.

Sioux Falls had more energy in the extra session and it paid off as Chad Duchesne scored 3:43 into the extra session. Conner Valesano sent a shot on net that was stopped by Hayton, but the rebound bounced inside the crease before Duchesne picked it up and jammed it into the back of the net to lift the Stampede to a 2-1 victory.

Sioux Falls outshot the Musketeers 37-22 on the night and went 0-for-6 on the power play while Sioux City went 1-for-4. The Herd will head back on the road next weekend with games Friday and Saturday night in Omaha and Lincoln. The Herd return home on October 25th for “Pink in the Rink Night,” presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital. Tickets are available through the Sioux Falls Arena box office or Ticketmaster.
