A mile wide tornado devastated parts of Wayne, Nebraska on Friday. Amidst the rubble, the remnants of Grossenburg Implement Inc., a company headquartered in Winner, South Dakota.
The storm came from the south.
An EF-4 tornado plowed through the eastern portion of Wayne, taking with it, Grossenburg Implement.
“Our business was hit with an F-4 tornado. We had 22 employees in the building and they were watching it come,” said CEO Barry Grossenburg.
A year ago, Barry Grossenburg cut the ribbon on his new property in Wayne. Friday, he got a call that he'll never forget.
“They called us and said, ‘we lost Wayne.’ I was terrified that we lost people,” recalled Grossenburg.
Moments before the twister turned buildings into piles of debris, those 22 workers ran for cover.
“When the tornado got (to the break room), the door slammed shut and they couldn't get into the break room. So, they dove under combines and tractors to ride it out,” said Grossenburg.
“It roared like they couldn't believe it and then it quit and the guys actually starting coming out of the break room and then, bang! It hit again,” said Grossenburg.
“One guy was a little cut but we don't lose anybody and no one got any serious injuries,” added Grossenburg.
Every worker is still alive in Wayne.
“Every pick up we got, every truck we got, every trailer we got, has severe damage,” added Grossenburg.
The storm packed 170 mile per hour winds. Now workers at Grossenburg do the only thing they can, pick up the pieces and move on.
