Black Hills Power says about 8,000 of the company's 59,000 customers remain without power as the storm recovery effort continues.
Vice president of operations Vance Crocker says he expects that about 95 percent of Black Hills Power's customers will have their service restored by the end of the week. Outages for customers in more remote hard-to-reach areas could last into next week.
The South Dakota Rural Electric Association says rural electric co-ops in western South Dakota still have 4,000 to 4,500 customers without service.
Crocker says the heavy snow melting onto unfrozen ground has created some mushy conditions across the Black Hills. The company has even had to use helicopters to fly in crews, as the company's ground equipment is getting bogged down in some areas.
