Cattle Losses Continue To Climb

Bookmark and Share

Cattle losses from the weekend snow storm continue to climb. As the snow begins to melt, ranchers are getting out onto their land and are finding more and more dead cows.

Silvia Christen with the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association estimates at least 15 to 20 percent of the cattle in that part of the state were killed in the snow storm. There are 1.4 million head in the affected area, and some ranchers are reporting that they lost as much as 20 to 50 percent of their herd.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture reminds ranchers to document their losses.

Tuesday Senator John Thune reached out to House Speaker John Boehner and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to assist ranchers who suffered livestock losses. Thune also has links on his website thune.senate.gov offering guidance for ranchers who are hoping to receive disaster assistance.
