SD Civil Air Patrol Checks Dead Cattle On Highways

Bookmark and Share

The South Dakota wing of the Civil Air Patrol has been flying over the western part of the state to locate livestock killed by the weekend blizzard.

The CAP was asked by the state Department of Public Safety to identify and photograph areas where dead livestock are obstructing state highways or are in road ditches. It was using three airplanes to conduct the survey.

Some ranchers in western South Dakota have reported as much as 50 percent or more of their cattle died after a day of rain was followed by two days of snow with winds up to 60 mph. An official of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association says 5 percent or more of the cattle in western South Dakota may have been killed in the last weekend's storm.
