Farmers Complete Harvest For Grieving Family

Bookmark and Share

After the death of an Irene farmer, the community is coming together to aid a grieving family. Dozens of farmers volunteered their time to help the family finish their harvest.

The roaring of combines could be heard throughout the fields. Only, these farmers aren't aiding to their own harvest, but to a close neighbor and friend.

"I can tell you my dad would be extremely humbled by this. He's not a guy that asks for a lot of help," said Dennis’ son, Nick Halvorson.

Fifty-six year old Dennis Halvorson battled cancer over the past year. His complications with Multiple Myeloma took his life just two weeks ago,

"He loved running cattle, selling cattle and farming. It was his whole life," Nick Halvorson.

"He started farming with his dad after high school and farmed up until the day that he left," said Dennis’ wife, Nancy Halvorson.

Now, more than a dozen combines, a handful of semi-trucks and around 50 farmers are remembering Dennis and taking care of his farm for him through the harvest.

"It's just incredible to see people come out and want help and do this just for us," Nick Halvorson.

All of these farmers put their own harvest on hold to help out a family in a time of need.

"It's kind of the way everyone grows up around here. You always help each other out, said family member harvest organizer, John Nelson.

By the time they are done these combines will have harvested 400 acres of soybeans.

"I know my dad would be smiling down right now knowing we are taking care of things and taking care of the farm like he would want," said Nick Halvorson.

It’s a celebration of harvest, good neighbors and a life well lived.

The family says they have yet to harvest corn. Friends are already organizing to help with that too.
