Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son died Friday in a Sioux Falls hospital from injuries he received on Wednesday. Authorities say the child’s mother’s boyfriend assaulted the boy.
That man, 27-year-old Joseph Robert Patterson, has a lengthy criminal record with charges stemming from domestic abuse and simple assault allegations.
Most recently, Patterson was charged with assaulting the mother of his own son and her 3-year-old boy.
A protection order was filed against Joseph Patterson, just last year. The mother of Patterson's young son said she feared Patterson would harm her and her children.
According to court documents, Patterson repeatedly spanked the woman's son so hard that the boy needed ice for welts. When the woman got upset over the discipline, Patterson ordered her children to their rooms, pulled the shades, then grabbed her by the throat and waived his fist at her.
Documents filed by the woman state that Patterson had been violent in the past and threatened to kill her multiple times.
The woman eventually dropped the protection orders, saying she was willing to attend counseling classes with Patterson.
However, Patterson was indicted on a number of charges including seven simple assault charges stemming from attacks on the woman and her young son. Patterson later pleaded guilty to simple assault.
A second case against Patterson charges him with having contact with the two, despite orders to stay away from them. Patterson was given a one-year jail term in each case, with all time suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.
Lincoln County States Attorney Tom Wollman asked a judge Friday to revoke the terms of Patterson’s suspended sentence and put him back in jail on those two domestic abuse cases, because of the new charges against him in this most recent child abuse case.
