On a team nicknamed "The Governors" there's no question who the commander and chief is.
"He can do it all. You know, he can run it, he can throw it. He's a great guy off the field. He's just, you know, an all-around great guy." Pierre Senior WR/DB Austin Christopherson says.
And with Pierre off to a 5-1 start, it's safe to say Alex Gray has a high approval rating.
"I like it. I just do what I can to lead the team and I just lead by example. And I just hope that they'll follow me." Gray says.
Part of that comes with experience. Pressed into action as a sophomore, the senior is now the face of Pierre football.
"You know, he bought in. He was one of those guys, first one that was in the weight room, he's the last guy out of the weight room every day. I mean, he's the one that's cheering people on, making sure people are showing up on time. You know, he's taking college classes in high school. I mean, he's one of those kids that does everything right." Pierre Head Coach Jayson Poppinga says.
And with a close knit group of upper-classmen, Gray thinks the Govs have what it takes to win it all for the first time since Pierre's last "mythical" state title 99 years ago.
"I think that it's huge because you can go out on the field and trust each other and you play as hard as you can for each other. I'm just more you just work as hard as you can. I tell everybody that. And if you started working as hard as you can, that's all you can do and that's all you can ever ask for." Gray says.
With Gray making the executive decisions, don't bet against it.
