Life With Laura: SF Jaycees Haunted House

Bookmark and Share

One of the best ways to spend a chilly October night is by visiting an adrenaline-boosting, heart-pounding and spine-tingling haunted house.

Built and run completely by volunteers for the last 40 years, the Sioux Falls Jaycees have a reputation for building one of the scariest houses in town.

With dozens of dark rooms, endless mazes and blood curdling screams, each year promises a bigger and better thrill.

Creating a house as spooky as the Jaycees Haunted House is no easy feat. Volunteers have just one week to transform an ordinary room into a house of fright.

“The volunteers sometimes put in 80 hours a week out here plus our full-time jobs. We have the best volunteers in the entire world," said Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda McNamara.

A lot goes in to creating a haunted house like this one. For those doing the scaring, it's all about looking the part - from the wardrobe to the makeup.

“The make up this year is going to the nines. We spend anywhere from 20 -30 minutes on each person to do their makeup,” said McNamara. “It's going to be very bloody, very gory and very dismembered. The house is the biggest that it's been in the last seven years. Expect a scare around every corner."

If you dare to enter this year's Jaycees Haunted House, appropriately themed "Slaughter House and Gore,” the doors officially open Thursday October 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. The house will remain open throughout the month of October.
