State DOT Says People Illegally Dumping Snow

Bookmark and Share

State officials say illegally dumped excess snow is causing problems on driving surfaces, shoulders and ditches.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is reminding public and commercial snow removal operators that it is illegal to place or dump excess snow on highway rights of way.

Rapid City region engineer Todd Seaman says a lot of snow has fallen in western and central South Dakota and the space needs to be reserved for future snow that may fall on the road. He says that not having a place to put that snow severely hampers plow operators' ability to clear roadways.

Director of operations Greg Fuller says snow piles can restrict sight distance and cause problems if a vehicle leaves the roadway.

Violation of the anti-dumping law is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
