SD Attorney General Educates Kids On Alcohol

Bookmark and Share

Students at Axtell Park Middle School took a break from the books to learn about the dangers of alcohol and underage drinking. Even South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley stopped by to underscore the importance of Thursday’s lesson.

Fifth, sixth and seventh graders piled in their cafetorium Monday afternoon learning about peer pressure through a program called, "Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don't Mix." But they aren't the only ones taking a break from class, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley stopped by, to talk about saying no to alcohol.

"This is our opportunity in South Dakota to hopefully influence or have an impact to 750 kids about a healthy lifestyle," said South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley.

Jackley gave three presentations throughout the afternoon. Being Attorney General, he shared his experiences he's seen with kids and drinking.

"With the change in society and technology, we are seeing the  experimental use of alcohol in younger and younger kids,” said Jackley.

Then the kids played wii games and trivia to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle.

"The most important thing is to keep them engaged and interactive while they are having a fun time," said a national program coordinator, Meghann Scherrer.

But this nation-wide program is different than the rest.

"It's actually financed by the alcohol industry that the alcohol industry teams with law enforcement about the dangers of drinking," said Jackley.

After the session, the students seem to agree that alcohol isn't the answer.

"I think it's a good thing because you have your whole life ahead of you and getting caught one time can mess it all up," student Steven Stevens.

The nation-wide program has had congress members, celebrity athletes and other attorneys general speak at programs. The event has also traveled to Rapid City in the past.
