Fill Your Bucket; Don't Be A Bully

Bookmark and Share

Bullying comes in all shapes and sizes; physical, mental, indirect and cyber.  Technology has made it easier for those who bully.

Rebecca Wimmer, the Center Director for Youth Enrichment Services, says the earlier we teach them, the better it might be.  "It's really something that we chose to focus on when these kids are young so that hopefully we don't have those things happen down the road.”

The Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire as well as the Youth Enrichment Services childcare centers are raising awareness about bullying in a colorful way.  Wimmer adds, "We have a different color for every day of the week; yellow is kind of our caution, pay attention.  Kind of our kickoff color for today.”

October is “Bullying Prevention Month” and the two groups are using this week to stand up against bullies.  All of the children, up to age 18, will learn about respect, kindness, diversity and compassion.  Wimmer challenges the children, saying, “We work very hard with them to make a variety of friends, to find different people to play with, maybe it is someone they don't normally play with but we try to encourage them."

On Monday, kids learned about diversity and being a positive person, for each of the good things they do, it's written down and put in the 'bucket'.  "So when you're being a good friend when you're being kind you're filling up someone's bucket but the great thing is you're filling up your own bucket," says Wimmer.

All these activities lead up to a movie showing on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Eastside Learning Center where parents are being encouraged to attend with their children.
