Hubbel Announces Run For SD Governor

Bookmark and Share

Gov. Dennis Daugaard now has some competition for his seat in 2014, but it isn't a democrat who is challenging him, it's another republican.

Former State Rep. Lora Hubbel made it official Monday. At the downtown public library in Sioux Falls, she told a crowd of about a couple dozen people the governor will have a republican challenger in the primary in June.

Hubbel stood in front of a podium and announced her plans to be the first woman governor in South Dakota.

As soon as she reached the microphone, she asked the question on the minds of many.

Hubbel said, "I'm sure today that the number one questions you may have on your minds is who does she think she is? Why? What's going on here? Why is she running? That's fair enough."

Hubbel also answered why.

Hubbel said, "The reason why Daugaard was elected, the rallying cry was 'it's his turn' and I'm just like, when do we let people because it's their turn."

She says there are three main reasons she chose to run. To keep taxes low, Hubbel says she wants to try tap into the state's natural resources. She's also against Common Core Standards or the set of national education standards adopted by 45 states including South Dakota.

"The Common Core is very similar to Obamacare or that it's the top down. Federal control of what you do," said Hubbel.

Most of what Hubbel talked about was just that, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

"I went to Pierre in 2011, thinking I was in the majority of those who wanted to stop Obamacare. I found out different pretty darn quick," said Hubbel.

She says it became clear to her that her party doesn't like the new healthcare system but they're addicted to the money that it will bring to the state.

Hubbel said, "I want to stop Obamacare at the borders of South Dakota."

Something, Hubbel says, Daugaard hasn't tried to do.

Hubbel served one term in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2011 and 2012. After she was forced into another district because of redistricting, Hubbel ran for state senate in 2012, but lost to State Senator Deb Peters. Peters was endorsed by Governor Dennis Daugaard in that race.

When asked about Hubbel's announcement Monday, Daugaard's office sent a statement that read:
'The Governor is not focused on politics right now - he is focused on doing the job that the voters elected him to do.'
