Group Plans Sculpture Park In Sioux City

Bookmark and Share

A nonprofit group is raising money for a sculpture park in Sioux City that would celebrate the community's cultural and racial diversity.

Artist Mark Avery and his wife, Terri, have created the group Celebrating Community Foundation.

Backers of the plan have met with community leaders and raised about $70,000 of the estimated $540,000 they'll need for the sculpture park.

Plans call for mounting 14 bronze busts on pedestals of people who have contributed to often marginalized communities, including Hispanics, blacks, American Indians and Jewish people.

The Averys have tentative agreements with the families of three people who would be honored and are in talks with eight other families.

Foundation member Jan Poulson says there's nothing like the planned park throughout the country.
