The holiday shopping season is right around the corner and one of the top destinations for shoppers in the area is the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls.
With a lot of construction still left to be done, the big question is, will the renovations be completed before the madness begins?
Driving by the Empire Mall in Sioux Falls, it’s obvious there's still a lot of work to be done. However, one step through the new sliding glass doors and the changes are easy to see.
“From floor to ceiling we've touched almost everything here," said Jennifer Morrison, Director of Marketing and Business Development at the Empire Mall.
Since January of this year, the Empire Mall has been under construction. The renovation has been a long time coming and the mall has a goal for it to be completed by the holiday shopping season.
“We started this project about the first of this year and we anticipate being done sometime in November, hopefully before Black Friday and the shopping experience starts,” said Dennis Giliam, General Manager of the Empire Mall.
Gilliam knows the busy shopping season is right around the corner. He says the changes that have been made, and the ones that are still in the making, will help make a shoppers experience better, especially during the mayhem of Black Friday.
Those who work in the mall agree.
"I think it just keeps the Empire Mall being a special destination mall,” said Nikki Sorenson, Store Manager of Buckle. “Not just because of where it’s at, but because of how new it looks and because of the variety of shops that we're going to be able to offer so we can compete with other markets like Kansas City, Omaha and Minneapolis.”
“The stores are very excited about all this being done not just because it is some hindrance to them, but also because it should bring a lot of people in here and they would be excited about it and possibly spend more money," said Gilliam.
From the new sliding glass doors that will make carrying armloads of shopping bags easier, to the completely renovated center court that creates more of an open feel, to new options like Dick's Sporting Goods and Build A Bear; the Empire Mall is making changes to benefit its customers.
“When you come to the mall now, whether you're driving outside or whether you're coming inside, you'll know the differences,” said Gilliam.
According to Gilliam, both Dick’s Sporting Goods and Build-A-Bear are expected to open the first week of November.
The mall renovations will also include new directional signs and multiple charging stations to recharge your phone or IPAD.
