SF Finalist For Hosting NCAA Championships

Bookmark and Share

The city of Sioux Falls is one step closer to hosting an NCAA Championship for the first time. On Wednesday, Director of Sioux Falls Sports Authority Wes Hall found out five of the 19 bids he submitted the city is a finalist for.

"I was so excited, Wes Hall, Director of Sioux Falls Sports Authority said.  "I just wanted to get it out as much as we could because this is a big deal, not only for the city of Sioux Falls, but for the state of South Dakota."

After weeks of hard work, and some nail biting waiting, Hall got the news he's been waiting for.

Hall said, "We were really confident. I mean when you look at our bids we put a lot of work and a lot of effort into that.

The bids Hall placed that the city is a finalist for include, division II men's and women's basketball and outdoor track and field. Also, included is division II women's volleyball and division II wrestling.

"The facilities that are represented in the bids are, The Sanford Pentagon, The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, and the University of Sioux Falls Track and Field Facility," Hall said.

But for Hall and the rest of his team, their work is far from over. He said now it's time to bring committee's together, get the community up to speed and show NCAA representatives just how serious Sioux Falls is about hosting a championship.

We will pull our committee together and figure out what our action plan will be for the next six weeks. We don't want to sit around and wait, we want to stay in contact with the committee chairs in Indianapolis,” Hall said.

Hall said he will be contacting local hotels, restaurants, and the airport to make sure they are aware of the possibility of hosting crowds this city has never seen before.

"(There's) Fort Lauderdale, Columbus, Daytona Beach..." Hall read off.

With cities like that vying for the same championships Hall knows there's a chance Sioux Falls won't make the final cut. But he said all in all, our little city has made a big impression.

Dec. 11 at noon is when Hall will find out if Sioux Falls will be hosting an NCAA Championship for the first time.

All together nearly 2,000 bids were placed across the nation.
