A major milestone took place Thursday in the fight to get more ice in Sioux Falls.
The Scheels Ice Plex broke ground after two years of fundraising. The $8.5 million complex will feature three NHL regulation size sheets of ice.
The Ice Plex will be open for recreational use, but will also be home to the Sioux Falls Youth Hockey Association, and the Sioux Falls Figure Skating Club.
"I think it kind of makes it official that the city really has united behind our project, and that the user groups stepped up, the city stepped up, the business community stepped up," said Joe Zueger, Co-Organizer of Ice Sports Association.
Construction on the Ice Plex will begin immediately, and is expected to open in Sept. of 2014. It is being built at the Sanford Sports Complex north of the Pentagon.
