Police are investigating another case of alleged child abuse Thursday night, this time in Orange City, Iowa. A daycare provider is under arrest after she admitted to throwing a 3-year-old girl to the ground, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
Thirty-three-year-old Rochelle Lynn Sapp is facing numerous charges after being accused of abusing a 3-year-old girl she was watching.
According to court documents Sapp was the little girl's daycare provider at this home on the 700 block of 10th Street Southeast in Orange City, Iowa. The documents read that a little after 9 o'clock Tuesday morning Sapp called the little girl's mother saying the 3-year-old had fallen down the stairs. But when the child's mother took her to the Orange City Hospital, doctors noticed something wasn't right.
Documents say hospital staff diagnosed the little girl with a head injury and she was air lifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Then doctors contacted the Sioux Falls Police Department because the injuries the 3-year-old had couldn't have been caused by her falling down the stairs.
On Thursday, police interviewed Sapp again about how the little girl got hurt, and then police say she confessed that she threw the child to the ground because she wouldn't take off her coat.
But despite what police and court documents say, Sapp's family is defending her, so much so that in our first attempts to film the home, her father blocked the camera. Filled with emotion he told us that this is a private matter and it has been hard on the family. He also said that Sapp never meant to hurt anyone.
Regardless of what happened however, a 3-year-old is in the hospital with a skull fracture and brain trauma, in critical condition.
Sapp is scheduled to be in court Friday. She faces charges including willful injury and child endangerment.
