Jansen leads Augie over St. Olaf

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana shot 48 percent from the field on its way to an 83-71 win in a foul-filled exhibition game over St. Olaf on Friday night in Sioux Falls. There was a total of 54 fouls called between the two teams.

Daniel Jansen just missed a double-double as he led Augustana with 21 points and nine rebounds. Casey Schilling added 16 points and six rebounds while finishing 7 of 12 from the free throw line.

Augustana out-rebounded St. Olaf 37-28 in the game, including 13-8 on the offensive glass. The Vikings shot 33 free throws in the game, hitting 22 while St. Olaf was 24 of 31 from the line.

Justin Pahl led St. Olaf with a game-high 28 points. Pahl was 8 of 13 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. He was also 9 of 11 from the free throw line. Sterling Nielsen added 15 points for the Oles with a team-high seven rebounds.

Augustana jumped out to an 8-2 lead over the first three minutes of the game with four players getting in on the scoring mix early. Taylor made it a six-point game hitting a 3-pointer from the left corner.

St. Olaf answered by going on a 6-0 in the next 60 seconds to tie the game at 8 after Justin Pahl picked up a steal and a bucket as the Oles put on the full-court pressure.

St. Olaf took a 13-12 lead on a 3-pointer by NathanKuck before the Vikings would go on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 22-15 lead with 8:31 to play in the first half. Augustana pushed its lead to 28-17 after two fastbreak buckets by Taylor.

The Oles were able to claw back and make it a five-point game with Pahl making three free throws in a 3-pointer but Jansen stole the momentum back with a one-handed dunk pushing Augustana's lead to 30-23.

That started a 14-4 run for the Vikings over the final five and a half minutes of the first half as Augustana would go into the locker room with a 42-28 lead. The Vikings shot 54 percent from the field in the half, including 33 percent from 3-point range.

The Vikings hit 11 of 16 free throws in the half, while St. Olaf attempted just seven shots from the line. Augustana out-rebounded the Oles in the half, 19-10, while grabbing five offensive rebounds.

Jansen led all players with 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half. Schilling added eight points and four rebounds. Pahl and Nielsen led St. Olaf in the first half with nine points each.

Pahl came out with a hot hand in the second half, scoring nine straight points to cut Augutana's lead to six at 42-36. That is all the closer St. Olaf was able to get over the first 10 minutes of the second half as Augustana was able to build a 15-point lead at 61-46 with 8:44 remaining in the game.

Augustana was on cruise control, leading by as much as 17 points in the second half as the Vikings went on to win 83-71.

Jamall Taylor finished with nine points for the Vikings while freshman Devin Gilligan picked up eight points and six rebounds. Yuriy Malashenko added eight points, going 2 of 4 from 3-point range and freshman Ethan Guske finished with seven points, going 5 of 7 from the free throw line.

Augustana is back in action this Sunday when it travels to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Hilton Coliseum.
