A celebration is planned for next weekend to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Hotel Alex Johnson in downtown Rapid City.
Work on it started one day before sculptor Gutzon Borglum chipped the first piece of granite from Mount Rushmore National Memorial in 1927.
The hotel opened July 1, 1928, through the work and insight of Alex C. Johnson. He came to the Black Hills in the 1880s to solicit railroad cattle shipments and eventually became vice president of Northwestern Railroad.
The three-day anniversary will carry a "Roaring 20s" theme, so hotel staff will don flapper-style dresses and tuxedos.
